The Cultural imaginationof Hindu India is the subject of this book. it shows how gendeed notions about women`s sexuality and Muslims debauchery were used to pull together a heterogeneous populance into a coherent Hindu community in colonial north India. THe author traces the deliberations of publicity on how to make hindu women `pure` on how todistance HIndus from Muslims and on what constitutes HIndu sacredness and purity as opposed to Islamic lust perversion. The book explores both the moral and sexul worries of an aspring section of hindu middle class caste reformers who epitomised male fears over women`s autonomy, and the heightened Hindu communal mobilisation that shaped everyday sites and relationships.
