Considered a decisive moment for Jean Renoir, The River, since its release in 1951, has received much and continuous attention. Critics of the time labelled it an instant "classic", most impressed by its portrayal of what was believed to be an "authentic" landscape, and Renoir gained the reputation of a master cinematographer because of the film`s experimentation with naturalism, colour and sets.
