Adolescent girls tend to stand between adulthood and childhood and they are vulnerable from many points of view. Nevertheless, their predicaments are largely ignored. A large number of them enter into matrimony and become young mothers before they have the opportunity to realize their full potential. Their unfortunate removal from schools at the onset of puberty often pushes them into household responsibilities if they are not married. This amounts to huge economic, social, and psychological loss, However, apparently there seems to be a complete lack of comprehensive study which brings about first hand data to analyse the socio-economic condition of adolescent girls.

It is in this backdrop, the book deals with the socio- economic condition of adolescent girls in India on the basis of data collected from sample survey of 1890 respondents from backward districts of poverty dominated states identified under Rashtriya Samvikas Yojana. The study brings about several dimensions and interrelationships which are of vital significance for understanding the adolescent girls` perspective and also for policy-making. A wide range of aspects such as schooling and dropout, earning and spending, domestic violence, sexual abuse, food intake and nutrition, marriage decision and dowry, pregnancy and child care, allocation of time and awareness have been analysed on the basis of first hand data and information. The book also puts in perspective adolescent girls` position vis-a-vis societal perception including parents and adolescent boys.

The analysis and findings presented in the book are its net contribution in enhancing a holistic understanding of adolescent girls in the poverty stricken area of the Indian society. The book holds immense potentiality for its practical suggestions which can go a long way in responsible policy-making. The book is useful for researchers, academics, socio-economic analysts and public policy-makers.
