The conclusion of the Expert Panel was that there is good potential for the safe use of saline-water for crop production. It recommended the integrated management of water of different qualities at the levels of the farm, irrigation system and drainage basin, with the explicit goals of increasing agricultural productivity, achieving optimal efficiency of water use, preventing on-site and off-site degradation and pollution and sustaining long-term production potential of land and water resources. In this publication the experts have drawn heavily on the papers presented in the Expert Consultation as well as on the recommendations that came out of the Consultation.
