The Dreams Of Tipu Sultan/Bali - The Sacrifice is a set of two plays by Girish Karnad. The Dreams Of Tipu Sultan is a popular play which has been performed across the world in multiple languages. The plays were created originally in Kannada and eventually translated into English.

The Dreams Of Tipu Sultan presents the last days of the life of Tipu Sultan, who was the ruler of Mysore and a prominent figure in Indian history. Tipu Sultan is known as a figure who resisted British rule in older times. The events of his life add an important chapter to Indian history and have been brought to life by Karnad’s play. Tipu’s dreams weren’t revealed for most of his life and these secrets came out in his last days. This play is an inspiring presentation of the aspirations of this king.

Bali - The Sacrifice presents the dilemma of a Jain king, who is tormented after finding out about his wife’s affair with an elephant keeper. The king is informed about this affair and is told that he can stop this unethical act from happening if he sacrifices the life of a cockerel. Being a Jain, the king follows the doctrine of nonviolence and hence decides to make a dough-cockerel and sacrifice it. The success or failure of this philosophy makes up the main theme of the play.

The Dreams Of Tipu Sultan/Bali - The Sacrifice was published by Oxford University Press in 2004 and is available as a paperback.ISBN - 9780195664768
