Divine prostitution means a woman enslaved for the service of some deity or sacred object. The term is the feminine form of "Devadas" a man who is enslaved for the service of a deity. Though the term has its origin in Sanskrit and means "God`s slave", the prevailing custom and practices are in no way related to the gods or deities mentioned in Sanskrit literature, especially the Trinity. However, there are many temple in different part of the country with a divine prostitute attached to it. In fact, a few temples have more than one devadasi attached to them to render several types of services to the deities and sacred objects. Several other factors are said to be responsible for the origin and existence of the divine prostitute in India. One among them is that a few deities demanded whole time devotees to serve them-both ritual and secular. Another reason is that the devotees themselves offered men and women to a deity for the service, expecting something in return. While other section of the society brought this custom into vogue to exploit another using the ritual and religious pretext, since the divine prostitute ultimately become the sex object of the dominant persons or groups.
