This monograph is a study of a thickly populated and advanced agrarian community in Kuttanad, Kerala where rapid ideological changes have taken place in the past few decades in an easy flowing narrative style, the author, a native of the village, begins with its historical setting and goes on the describe the caste system, the inter-caste relationships sand the sizeable Christian community in a deeply sympathetic account of his co-villagers. His sociological study also analyses the agrarian structure, the local level politics and the positions of women. The Epilogue Seven Years One brings the study up to date with the account of the petrodoolar influx into the economy of Kerala. In man ways slow flows the Pampa is a microcosm of India as the late Prof. E.E. Evans-Pritchard in his Foreward to the book says. I found the book to be excellent, almost exciting reading; an it certainly paints a vivid picture of Indian village life that enables one who, like myself, does not know India to appreciate, and understand, the way of like and the thought and values of her people, and the changes that have place in them in recent times and are still taking place. Sociologists, anthropologists, development speicalists, and the lay reader will find this book of absorbing interest.
