This book exposes some important problems of food production and consumption. Drawing on recent South Asian material, it analyses social, political and environmental causes of malnutrition and puts them in the context of agricultural development. Without claiming to provide slick or easy solutions, it indicates some of the ways in which agriculturalists may effectively attack acute and chronic food` problems.
Written by a group which includes nutrition, development economics, geography, agriculture and medicine in its collective expertise, the book affords an unusual perspective on food shortage and malnutrition. Rejecting some conventional views of these problems (such as `the myth of the ignorant peasant`), it may well challenge the reader`s preconceptions about desirable pathways of development for rural tropical communities.
