A shock wave is a phenomenon in the realm of fluid mechanics, characterised by a sudden change in the characteristics of the medium, such as pressure, temperature and speed. It may arise at explosions, detonation, supersonic movements of bodies, powerful electric discharges, etc. The scope of the research pertaining to this phenomena varies from basic shock wave phenomena in gases, liquids and solids to their interdisciplinary applications in earth sciences (e.g., to clarify the mechanism of volcanic eruption and to predict and overcome blast disasters), medical treatment (in urology, orthopaedics, rheumatology, cardiology, gastroenterology, cancer treatment, orthopaedic surgery, neuro-surgery, etc), and industry (automobile, semiconductor, space, etc).
