The Letters that make up this volume were written by Robert Bridges, Ernest Rhys, W.B. Yeats, Thomas Sturge Moore, R.C. Trevelyan and Ezra Pound to Rabindranath Tagore between 1912-1940. Tagore came to know these poets during his third visit to England in 1912-13, initially through William Rothenstein, and with some of them - Ernest Rhys and Sturge Moore, for example - his friendship lasted till his death. I am aware that the letters colected here would read like a series of monologues in the absence of the recipient`s response. I had to work within this constraint because Tagore`s correspondance with these poets was not available in the holdings of the Rabindra-Bhavana and I did not think it wise to depend on copies - at any rate, only a negligible part of the total correspondance - done by several hands and in some cases, inaccurately typed. However, by way of a poor substitute, I have tried to fill in the gaps by supplying additional information wherever I could in the notes appended to each letter.
