  First published in 1719, Daniel Defoe`s novel Robinson Crusoe is sometimes also considered as the first English novel. It is loosely based on the life and story of Scotsman Alexander Selkirk. He was a Scottish castaway who lived more than four years on the Pacific island that was called Mas a Tierra.

Later, in 1966 its name was changed to Robinson Crusoe Island. After the success of Robinson Crusoe, Defoe wrote a sequel to it as well, titled The Further Adventures of Robinson Crusoe.
