The study brings together the contibutions of wixteen eminent sociologists and political scientsts from different parts of India on the role of the elite as it affects the problems and prospects of development in the country. It highlights the social forces leading to the creation of the new elites as well as their role in the social transformation taking place therein. In developing countries, the polotical elite has a deciding vboice in determining the path of development effort would depend upon their capacity for rousing popular enthusiasm and the support they got from the peasantry and the urban poor. In the absence of a bond between the elite and the masses, the aspirations and interests of the masses tend to be ignored. In some cases the elite hinder or manipulate reform in thier own interest and are largely in favour of the status quo. Although the Indian elite on the eve of independence were committed to usher in modernizaiton and egalitarianism, these two ideals proved elusive. In the present volume different social scientists examine why this has been so and what is the way out of the malaise.ISBN:0000000116
