The very nature of the SPIG is to have four different fields that converge into multidisciplinary field of the physics of ionized gases: gas phase and binary collisions, collisions with surfaces, low temperature plasmas and collective phenomena. These four fields have strong interactions in numerous applications; however, due to the development of specialized international conferences, it has become increasingly rare that such a wide range of topics is covered at a single conference. As the four fields often overlap and merge in numerous fundamental studies and more importantly applications, SPIG serves as a venue for exchanging ideas in the four related fields. Besides the typical proceedings of contributed papers with abstracts of invited lectures and progress reports, the complete invited lectures and progress reports are published in book form under the title "Physics of Ionized Gases". These books have become not only a significant source of scientific information but also important textbooks for postgraduate students worldwide.
This volume contains the Invited lectures, Topical invited lectures and Progress reports presented at the 23rd Summer School and International Symposium on the Physics of Ionized Gases – SPIG 2006. The Invited lectures and Topical invited lectures contain broader introductions to be appreciated by graduate students and specialists in other fields, but also offer a review of the up-to-date progress in the specific field. The Progress reports contain up-to-date results in the field mostly done by the young scientists with recent PhDs.
