The book begins when in May, 1827, the Pickwick Club of London, administered by the protagonist Samuel Pickwick, concludes on establishing a travelling society in which its four members travel around England and prepare reports on their findings. The four members of this club are Mr. Pickwick, a retired businessman and thinker whose views never rise above the usual; Augustus Snodgrass, a poet who never writes a poem; Tracy Tupman, a ladies` man who never emerges victorious; and Nathaniel Winkle, a sportsman of appalling incapacity. Their journey throughout the English countryside in a coach is the highlight of the novel. From the devious tricks of affectionate Alfred Jingle and wittiness of Sam Weller to the unforgettable Fat Boy and the deceitful lawyers Dodson and Fogg, The Pickwick Papers reels with ecstatic imagination and contagious good humor. Each character in the book is drawn comically, often with exaggerated personalities. The novel is a comic masterpiece with a sequence of loosely-related adventures.

The author’s amusing, anecdotal accounts of the compassionate and trusting Samuel Pickwick and his companions in the Pickwick Club received immediate success thereby making him a literary sensation worldwide.

The novel has been adapted into films at least four times, all silent films and the first sound version came out in 1952. There have also been BBC radio and television adaptations. Also, a part of The Pickwick Papers featured in Charles Dickens` Ghost Stories, a 60 minute animation film made by Emerald City Films in the year 1987.ISBN - 9780553211238
