The Thugs were a secret society of highway robbers and murderers who struck havoc in India. So secret was the fraternity that they remained undetected for centuries till the labours of William Sleeman traced them out and destroyed them. The Thugs, usually disguised as a party of pilgrims, joined up with other caravans and at the opportune moment strangled the hosts and decamped with the spoils. Their method of killing was strangulation with a yellow scarf and they believed that their occupation had divine sanction. They had their own language - Ramaseena, and operated all over India. This book is the tale of a fictious Thug called Ameer Ali: even though the protagonist is ficticious, the novel is grounded firmly in fact and elucidates all the rites, customs and operations of this murderous clan in faithful detail. This book is a reprint of the 1883 edition. 19th century - Nineteenth century ISBN - 9788120603301
