The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary was created to be an abridged version of the full Oxford English Dictionary. However, with each new edition, revisions and additions have been made to it. The most significant addition to the book was an enlarged addenda, which was added in 1973 and has over 60 pages.
The new edition of this book has a mass revision of all the etymologies. It is a re-abridged version of the original full Oxford Dictionary. It includes all the words used in current English from 1700 to the present day. It covers one-third of the Oxford English Dictionary, but is one-tenth of the size. The book also includes Shakespearean vocabulary, and words from the Bible and other major English works from before 1700.
This book has 2500 new senses and words, plus a multitude of antedatings of existing words. It also contains an introduction on the history of English by David Crystal. The defining vocabulary and spelling forms have been fully reviewed and new quotes from recent authors have been included. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary was published by Oxford University Press in 2007. This is the 6th edition, and it is available in hardcover.
