The 300th birth anniversary of the Khalsa (1999 A.D.) is not only a joyous occasion for celebration but is also a great opportunity to refresh our minds with the purpose and philosophy behind the advent of the Khalsa as also to refill our hearts with the light that brought it forth and galvanised it. Guru Gobind Singh`s object of creating the Khalsa was to widen the scope of religion and religious experience so that it could become an instrument of social change, such as, in fact, was the need of the time.
