This book deals with the problems of small scale and cottage industries which are destined to play an important role in the Indian economy. They account for a size-able percentage of the industrial output despite and acute shortage of materials and other attendant problems. This sector is poised for momentous growth in the years ahead. The Fifth Plan has laid positive stress on this sector which includes reservation of spheres of production, limitations on the expansion capacity in the competitive large scale industry, subsidy and so on. Dr. Rao, a specialist in the field of small scale and cottage industries and a staunch advocate for their rightful place in a developing economy, has made a vigorous plea that this sector schould not be starved for lack of funds; and that it should also be encouraged to stand on is own feet. The problems accruing to industrial co-operatives are also highlighted here. With his usual competence, the author has marshalled facts and figures to support his plea for developing cottage industries so as to ensure effective mobilizatioin of resources both of capital and skill particularly in India rural economy. This in turn, he argues, will mitigate to a great extent the unemployment problem in the country and set the trend for a more equitable distribution of the national income.
