The problems of drought areas have been receiving increasing attention at the hands of the government. To this effect a number of special rural development programmes such as Drought prone Area programme, Command Area Development Programme etc. have been formulated and implemented. The role of co-operative institutions in supporting such programmes cannot be over emphasised.
This work examines the role of co-operative banks in chronically drought prone areas and makes a critical analysis of the progress made by these bands in enrolling members, mobilization of resources, extent of beneficiaries, credit disbursement outstanding , recovery, over due problems etc.
