Every year I have the privilege of coming to this Convocation and I look forward to this annual visit which is to me an annual pilgrimage. Jawaharlal Nehru, 1962. To come to Santiniketan is like a pilgrimage. It is a place hallowed by the memory of a father and a son who sought to understand the meaning of life. Maharshi Debendranath chose Santiniketan as the haven of meditation. To Gurudeva Rabindranath, it was a symbol of fusion between contemplation and action, of the endeavour to find harmony in the increasing complexity of life and civilization returning to its roots to the lap of rural life, enriching it and at the same time drawing new life from the roots. Indira Gandhi, 1970. I feel honoured to be the Acharya of Visva Bharati. My grandfather and mother were greatly influenced by Gurudeva Tagore. His art and philosophy and his vision of a universal human being affected them deeply. Visva Bharati was started as a great experiment in education. It has a major role to play as a centre of learning and thought- Rajiv Gandhi, 1988.
