The Bureau of Indian Standards revised the code of practice IS:800–1962 and published the revised code IS: 800–1984 (Second Rev.) under the new title Code of Practice for General Construction in Steel. As a result of the significant changes,
the Torsteel Research Foundation in India felt that there was an immediate need for a Structural Steel Handbook which gives permissible stresses and safe loads for beams, built-up beams, plate girders, joist and channel columns and single and double- angle ties and struts, calculated in accordance with the equirements of the revised code.
