This is an ethnographic study of love-marriages in Delhi. Amongst other things, it examines the ways in which `rights` have come to be constituted in modern-day Delhi and is concerned with the political legitimation of love and the institutional processes through which indians use courts to marry with or without the support of their families. Its findings bear upon anthropological understanding of marriageability, urban morality, gender, kinship and the study of the individual and the couple in contemporary India. It addresses the ways in which reportage of love and marriage function in the making of north Indian politics, the Indian individual and the nation.
