It is customary for countries to present an outline of their legal system so that the people in the countries and abroad might, with profit, refer to them for general information and further studies. The Indian Law Institute undertook this work as early as in 1978 when it brought out this prestigious publication-the Indian Legal System. Its usefulness made it popular and as a result it is now out of stock.

Since the publication in 1978 India made may strides in legislation and litigation and its statute book is now full of new pieces of legislation on a different variety of subjects. We have therefore decided to revise the book by way of updating and additions/deletions to the original contributions. The names of revising authors have been mentioned at appropriate places.

Indeed, India could not so far have a uniform civil code. However, as expressed by the lamented Prof. Joseph Minattur in the `introduction` Indian Legal Culture has its impact on different shores in the world today. And India indeed has become an economic power-center.
