Middlesex is the second novel by Jeffrey Eugenides. It is about a teenage girl who suddenly makes a shocking and life changing discovery about herself. Calliope Stephanides, the protagonist of the novel, is a student at a girls’ school at Grosse Pointe. It is here that she discovers that she is indeed very different from the other girls around her. This becomes a turning point in her life. Calliope becomes a myth as well as a real presence. The novel spans across three generations of the family. The narration takes off from the present and then goes back as far as 1922 when the Turks sacked Smyrna, and Calliope’s grandparents were forced to flee. It is an interesting story, which becomes even more gripping with the mode of narration employed by the author. The novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2003.

Jeffrey Eugenides is an American author of mixed Greek and Irish origins. He has written a number of short stories and essays. His first novel The Virgin Suicides gained immense popularity, and with his second novel Middlesex winning the Pulitzer, Eugenides took up a significant position in the sphere of English literature.
