The study aims at clarifying the structural changes in India`s textile industry focusing on export of fabrics and graments. The work addresses such isues as, India`s export performance in fabrics and ready made garments, the effect of quota restrictions on India`s exports, import subsititution of textilies in India, the compostion of the handloom, powrloom and mil sectors, sickness and prosperity in the mill sector, the results of 1985 textile policy, macro-economic policy changes of 1991 with the intention of liberalising regulations and reducing state intervention and the effect of economic reforms on Indian economy in general and textile economy in particular.
